Because sin is alive in our bodies (Romans 7:23) and because we are beset with weakness (Hebrews 5:2), the kind of shame we often experience is a potent combination of failure and pride. We fail morally (sin), we fail due to our limitations (weakness), and we fail because the creation is subject to futility and doesn’t work right (Romans 8:20). We also fail to live up to other peoples expectations. And because we are full of sinful pride, we are ashamed of our failures and weaknesses, and will go to almost any length to hide them from others. Our shame frequently encourages us to hide in the wrong places. But what about in worship? Do we hide in worship?
Let’ read John 12 ” Six days before ithe Passover, jJesus therefore came to Bethany, kwhere Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they gave a dinner forhim there. lMartha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table.3 mMary therefore took a pound1 of expensive ointment made from pure nard, andanointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with thefragrance of the perfume.
Here is where we see Mary, the one in whom Jesus cast out 7 demons, the Mary we see setting at His feet while Martha is yelling in the background to have Mary help her prepare a meal. And we see here in John 12 when Mary takes the ointment that was worth a years wages and carelessly breaks the jar and anoints his head and feet.

There were two things women did not do at this time in culture. 1) It was during dinner 2) women never exposed their hair.
Yet, she anointed Him during dinner and the fragrance filled the house.
When we are in the presence of the Lord, powerful reactions occur and this is why Mary was able to do what she did without care for the backlash she would receive.
When was the last time we worshipped the Lord unashamed?
