Christ in the O.T.

There are so many stories that resemble Christ in the O.T.

The Bible tells us this in John 1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”

Amid the curse right after the Fall of Adam and Eve Genesis 3:15, God says:

 “I will put enmity between you and the woman
    and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
    and you shall bruise his heel.”

Let’s fast forward to 2 Samuel 17 to the well known story of “David and Goliath”

The background to what is happening is the Philistines are gathered with their army, and the Israelites are there with their army with a valley separating the two. But one man, a nine-foot giant, is taunting the Israelites, shouting threats and asking to battle with someone from the Israelite army. everyone is afraid of this behemoth of a man, Goliath. But David, overhearing Goliath taunt and defile the Living God, David then begins to ask Saul to fight this man, with hesitation from Saul, he finally agrees and sends David to fight Goliath.

David is the Lord’s anointed; (Messiah) we should see in David the greater Christ to come in this story.

As David walks out to meet this giant, Goliath comes out, he wears a coat of scale armor, and he looks like a 9-foot tall serpent, Goliath who said in verse 9 “If I win you become my slave forever,” we see the picture here of what the enemy does – to keep souls in bondage.

As we all know, David crushes the head of the serpent, a picture of what was to come in a thousand years when Christ came to defeat death, hell, and the grave.

We shouldn’t see ourselves as David and fighting off our own giants, we are behind our Champion who goes before us!

Deut 31:8 “It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

We are behind our Champion who has disarmed Satan.

Colossians 2:15 “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”

We are behind our Champion who has given us the victory!

1 Corinthians 15:57 “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Our champion, Jesus Christ, has gone out and bruised the head of the enemy, so we don’t have to be slaves to our past anymore! Your battles are of the Lord’s, let Him confront your giants!
