What Does a Repentant Heart Look Like?

What Does a Repentant Heart Look Like?

“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him.  the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

Reading about the lives of Saul and David, one would wonder why God would choose David to be king.

  • He committed murder.
  • he committed adultery.

Meanwhile, Saul?

× No adultery.

× No killing for lust.

× No scandal about his marriage.

From the outside, Saul looks better.

But God saw something deeper…The Heart.

Saul’s Heart:

When he sinned,

  • he made excuses
  • blamed others
  • he never owned his mistakes
  • His repentance wasn’t real. It was about image, not intimacy with God.

Over-Time

  • pride
  • half-hearted obedience
  • jealousy

Began to harden his heart.

David sinned:

  •   Owned up immediately when confronted.
  •   Humbled himself before God.
  •   Begged for mercy and cleansing (Psalm 51).

David didn’t pretend. He didn’t sugarcoat.

He let God break him so God could restore him.

We can look at Saul and David, scratch our heads.  And say “They messed up”

We need to examine our own lives, all the mistakes, sins, disobedience, rebellion, idicoracy, Why would God choose us?

HIS LOVE

Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

We were one of the “whosoever”

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Thank God for the grace that He has given us, that his kindness that leads us to repentance.

Why would God have even considered Saul or David?

God knew both of there hearts, but He seen the tenderness of David’s heart.

1 Sam 13:14 “The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart…”

In the end, it’s not about never falling it’s about who you run to when you do.

Being “A man or woman after God’s own heart” doesn’t mean being sinless. It means being quick to repent, humble enough to admit you’re wrong, and
humble enough to admit you’re wrong, and desperate for God’s presence above everything else.

God’s grace is bigger than your worst sin.

No matter what you’ve done, it’s not the end if you run back to God.

1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
